Hyderabad: In order to provide impetus to the research work happening in its labs and research centres and to be able to provide them a go-to market strategy, International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, has established a first-of-its-kind Product Lab.
Speaking about the lab, Ramesh Loganathan, Professor, IIIT-H told Telangana Today, “Most of the academic institutions face this problem, wherein though there is a lot of research that happens but the connection to market is elusive. This Product Lab will bridge the gap between research and market. This will mark a step towards translating research into products. We are hiring a senior person from the industry and few engineers to help researchers understand the market and build prototypes. The group will identify market opportunities for the research happening in the labs.”
Loganathan also explained that their major focus areas will be in the field of medical wherein they are getting a lot of traction in terms of research. “We are even starting med-tech accelerator,” he said. In addition, the lab will also work on research in the domain of technologies solving social problems.
The lab is part of the institute’s Technology Transfer Office (TTO) and will work on creating market prototypes of research work from its labs and centres. The product labs will identify potential products based on market and strategy analysis, identify suitable research as available and then build the prototypes of these products along with associated businesses and market plans.
Commenting on this initiative, Vasudeva Varma, dean of R&D, IIIT-Hyderabad said, “Product Lab will be working on IIIT-Hyderabad’s commercially viable matured technologies. We hope this will help bridge the Lab-to-Land chasm and the adaptability of our research can make a significant contribution to society at large.”
