Hyderabad: Animal volunteers from Greater Hyderabad Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GHSPCA) have rescued an Indian flapshell turtle near Noorkhan bazar on Sunday. Soudharm Bhandari from GHSPCA said that he got a rescue call from a volunteer and to his surprise, found a turtle along the roadside.

“I brought the turtle back and took pictures of it and shared them with our research head Shaik Hussain who confirmed it to be Indian flapshell turtle,” he said.

Having a life span of 20 to 40 years, it is a very common turtle in South Asia and mostly lives in freshwater bodies like lakes, ponds and rivers.

He said that the turtle was active and healthy and hence on Monday morning the GHSPCA volunteers released the turtle in the Ameenpur lake, which is an ideal habitat for such species. People in Hyderabad who want to report instances of animals in distress can call GHSPCA (8886743881) for rescue and rehabilitation.
