Hyderabad: Hosts India had a mixed day as the men’s team cruised into the semifinal while the women’s team crashed out from quarterfinals in the ISTAF World Cup Sepak Takraw Championship at the GMC Balayogi Indoor Stadium at Gachibowli on Friday.

In the morning session, Indian men defeated a spirited Iran in straight sets with 21-16, 21-19. The match was a close affair with the opposition not conceding any easy points.

However, the women’s team failed to replicate the same result as they went down 15-21, 21-23. The host team struggled with on-field coordination that did not help their cause. While they looked far from their best in the first set, they began well in the second taking a commendable 8-0 lead. But the lanky Iranians staged a good comeback to win the set and match 23-21 to enter the last-four stage.
