Hyderabad: It is suspected that Safeer Karim, the IPS trainee officer held in Chennai on Monday for cheating in the UPSC examination, and his wife Joicy Joy, who was arrested from Hyderabad, had resorted to similar malpractice in the preliminary test of the exam held in June.

The Hyderabad Task Force while examining Joy’s laptop, who was arrested along with Karim’s friend Rambabu from the ‘La Excellence IAS’ coaching centre at Ashok Nagar Crossroads here, said they found question papers and other study material of the prelims.

“Soon after we detained her and the coaching centre director, we seized her cellphone and laptop. When our technical team checked the files, we found question papers and other study material related to various subjects saved. We also found material of the prelims held in June and previous exams too,” said a Task Force official.

Karim, currently a probationary Assistant Superintendent of Police in Tirunelvelli of Tamil Nadu, was aspiring to be an IAS officer and was caught cheating during the civil services exam in a school at Egmore. Electronic devices concealed in his clothes were seized.

“He used a pocket camera fixed to his shirt with which he clicked pictures of the question papers and sent to his wife via Google Drive to her phone. She was sitting in the coaching centre here in Hyderabad and passing on answers through a bluetooth device fixed to his ear,” police said.

The Chennai police, who arrested Karim, had informed their counterparts in Hyderabad, who raided the coaching centre and arrested Joy and Rambabu late on Monday. Police said Karim was running coaching centres called Karim’s IAS at various places including Delhi, Cochin and Thiruvananthapuram. His friend Rambabu was a guest faculty and allegedly helped him cheat in the exam.

“Karim and Rambabu are close friends and the latter decided to help Karim clear the civil service exams. He gave accommodation to Joy in his coaching centre and also provided a laptop,” police said.

On Tuesday morning, police officials from Chennai and Task Force inspected the coaching centre, where there was mild tension during a protest by student organisations.

Joy and Rambabu have been handed over to the Chennai police. The duo was produced before the local court here in Nampally and were taken to Chennai in a flight. The Chennai police have already registered a case for case and are probing.
