Hyderabad: Following the successful filling of Mid Manair to its full reservoir level of 25 tmc, the Telangana government is making all-out efforts to take water to Kondapochamma Reservoir this year under the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP).
With over an ayacut 5,95,754 acres waiting to be canal irrigated under this reservoir, the irrigation experts are eagerly waiting for the event to unfold sometime this year.
However, from Mid Manair to Kondapochamma Sagar the water has to traverse through Annapurna Anantagiri Reservoir built under link 4, partly through tunnels and open canals, and pump water to Ranganayak Sagar with the help of four pumps. From Ranganayak Sagar the water will be taken in a similar manner to Mallanna Sagar. But with work on 50 tmc capacity Mallanna Sagar still going on an open channel was dug through the bed of the Mallanna Sagar Reservoir to take water to 15 tmc capacity Kondapochamma in Siddipet. The canal will then be submerged once the work on Mallanna Sagar is completed.
Electricity works for the four pumps in 344 mw capacity (43X8) Mallanna Sagar Pump House were completed. Works on four other pumps are progressing. To supply power to these pumps, the construction of the electric sub-station and power supply lines have almost been completed. At present works are underway connecting Mid Manair to Kondapochamma Reservoir under packages 10 to 14. Around 1 tmc water per day will be pumped from Annapurna Anantagiri with the help of four pumps, four pumps to lift one tmc from Ranganayak Sagar, eight pumps from Mallanna Sagar to lift 0.80 tmc to Kondapochamma Sagar. Kondapochamma Sagar will have two pump houses each with six pumps lifting 0.65 tmc of water.
Meanwhile canals as long 600 km are being built of which 450 km will be distributary canals from Kondapochamma. Excavation work has been undertaken in 170 villages. “After link 1 and link 2, commissioning of the major link 4 will be an achievement. Enroute Kondapochamma we will fill all tanks,” a senior irrigation expert told ‘Telangana Today’.
From Mallanna Sagar which serves to 61 per cent ayacut under the KLIP, water will be taken to Nalgonda as far as Baswapur reservoir under package 16 through an independent link. Another independent link will take water to Singur. From the Nalgonda branch another canal reaches Kondapochamma.
Water to Singur
Experts said that the much awaited Mallanna Sagar-Singur link would also be ready in a year. It was during 2016 floods, water was taken from Singur to Mid Manair via Nizamsagar, SRSP and flood flow canal. Around 5 tmc of Manjeera water was taken from Singur to Mid Manair to mitigate water problems there. Now the KLIP water will as well reach Singur once that link is completed.
