Adilabad: Madavi Kannibai, a young adivasi mountaineer, has been appointed vice-president of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh units of Waterfall Rappelling World Cup Organising Committee (WRWCOC). An order to this effect was issued by K. Ranga Rao, Director of Adventure Club of Telangana on Saturday, recognising her remarkable contributions to the field.
A native of remote Bheemangondi village in Kerameri mandal of Kumram Bheem Asifabad district, Kannibai had created a record of sorts by unfurling the tri-color flag on the 6,512 metres height mountain, Mountain Bhageerathi II, in Uttarakhand by embarking on 18-day long mountaineering, on June 2 last. She won laurels for accomplishing the daunting task, braving many odds.
Kannibai told Telangana Today’ that she felt happy to have been appointed as the vice-president of WRWCOC. She said that she would train girls who are interested in learning rappelling and mountaineering. She thanked Ranga Rao and members of the association for recognising her efforts to promote the field in Telangana.
To her credite, The mountaineer had bagged a bronze medal in the 1st Waterfall Rappelling World Cup held in Adilabad in 2019. She had volunteered in many adventure camps and participated in adventure sports such as rock climbing, trekking, etc in several parts of Telangana. She is currently leading a risk team at Mavala park or Adilabad Harita Vanam, an urban forest park.
The daughter of a daily-wage earner, tribal adventurer was the brand ambassador of the 2nd Waterfall Rappelling World Cup organised at Katika Waterfall in Andhra Pradesh in January last. She was presented the certificate of appreciation by Collector Divya Devarajan for excelling in mountaineering, during Independence Day celebrations held in 2019.
