Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao announced that the much-awaited ‘Kanti Velugu’ programme, aimed at providing free eye care, will be launched on August 15, marking the Independence Day celebrations.

The government will hold eye camps under the scheme besides distributing spectacles and performing eye surgeries for the needy patients free of cost.

In his State Formation Day celebrations address at Parade Grounds on Saturday, the Chief Minister listed out various welfare schemes such as Kalyana Lakshmi, KCR Kits, Aasara pensions and double-bedroom houses, among others.

“Due to our efforts, the condition of government hospitals has improved and are now competing with corporate hospitals after modern equipment was installed. Governor ESL Narasimhan himself got treated at Gandhi Hospital, indicating the improved medical and healthcare condition in the government hospitals,” he said.

He said about 17 of 39 proposed dialysis centres have started functioning and added that KCR Kits for pregnant women had reduced infant and maternal mortality rate considerably.

Rao observed that many of the schemes brought into practice were not even part of TRS’ election manifesto but they have benefitted the people. He said the government had introduced social welfare schemes, including double-bedroom housing, financial assistance to brides under Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubaarak, residential schools and colleges, among others.

“For empowerment of villages, the government has brought new Panchayat Raj Act and more powers have been given to gram panchayats. We were able to realise the dream of scores of SCs and STs upgrading remote hamlets into gram panchayats,” the Chief Minister said. He added that 4,383 new gram panchayats were created.
