Medak: Finance Minister T Harish Rao on Tuesday said the State government will extend all help to fishermen in marketing and exporting their catch.
Urging fishermen societies not to sell the rights of fishing to middlemen, Harish Rao called upon them to carry out fishing and marketing on their own to get optimum benefit. Stating that they will get subsidised loans to set up storage facilities, the Minister said that Telangana fishermen should export fish to all parts of the country.
The Minister, who released fishlings into D Dharmaram village lake in Ramayampet mandal, said Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme would further enhance the profits of the fishermen. “Since we have been filling tanks with Godavari water, fishermen can find fish round the year as the lakes will remain full with water,” he said.
Stating that they were gearing up to release 5 crore fishlings into 1,596 tanks in Medak district, Rao said that they used to release the fish into just five or six tanks in erstwhile Medak district before the formation of Telangana as the previous governments had neglected the fishing communities.
Elaborating the efforts of the government to boost the lives of the fishermen, Rao said the Telangana government was going to release over 80 crore fishlings this year. He further said the Fisheries Department would release shrimps into Ghanpur anicut and Haldi Vagu. The Minister said the State would export fish and shrimps to other States.
