Hyderabad: Responding to a request made by a film producer, TRS working president KT Rama Rao appealed to the union ministers to accord national award eligibility status for C/o Kancharapalem, a Telugu movie released in 2018.
The movie was deemed ineligible for Indian National Film Awards as the producer of the film, Praveena Paruchuri was a Non-Resident Indian. Praveena took to Twitter to express her disappointment saying, “Care of Kancharapalem was made in India, by Indians, with Indians, released in India and appreciated by Indians, yet is not eligible for national film awards”.
Responding to the tweet, KTR appealed to Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, and Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Rajyavardhan Rathore to review the appeal. He said, “National awards are a matter of pride for all filmmakers. An award cannot be denied for a Made In India product because of archaic rules that are redundant in today’s India”.
Also, Venkatesh Maha, director of the film said, “Outdated rules and regulations of the country must be changed”.
Meanwhile, Praveena thanked KTR for the response and for understanding the importance of the request.
C/o Kancharapalem, a village drama, set in the backdrop of Kancharapalem village was released in September 2018 and opened to critical acclaim from the audience. The locals of the village acted in important roles in the film which was appreciated for its raw portrayal of the characters.
However, responding to the tweet of KTR, Rathore said his office had contacted Praveena and guided her on the possibility of her application.
He added, “These are National Film Awards require producer or at least one co-producer to be Indian.”
