Kumram Bheem Asifabad: Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao responded to a tweet by Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief N Uttam Kumar Reddy over the plight of a tribal couple belonging to interior Karjavelli village in Chinthalamanepalli mandal on Tuesday evening over collection of property tax.

He asked the District Collector to grant a 2BHK house to the elderly couple and to extend Aasara scheme if they were not already covered under it.

Rama Rao replied to a plea made by Reddy on the micro-blogging site. His tweet read: “Thanks Uttam Kumar Reddy Garu for bringing it to my notice. Request the @Collector_KB to direct local panchayat secretary to rectify this mistake and also to provide them with 2BHK and Aasara Pension if they aren’t already receiving it.”

Earlier, Reddy in his tweet to the minister, stated: “The aged couple living in a hut from Kumram Bheem Asifabad District has been asked to cough up Rs 500 property tax. Local officials’ apathy is sickening.” He appealed to Chief Minister’s Office and K T Rama Rao for refund of tax collected and rehabilitating the couple in a double bedroom house immediately.

It may be recalled that Telangana Today had reported recently that Narneni Sunil, a panchayat secretary, was trolled by users of Facebook and on WhatsApp groups for deducting the amount from the pension of Pangidi Cheekati, an 80-year old tribal from Karjavelli.

Sudheer Jalagam tweeted and tagged the CMO and Minister for Housing and Endowments Allola Indrakaran Reddy on June 6 on the issue. Subsequently, District Panchayat Raj Officer Sangham Gangadhar Goud had initiated action against Sunil for taxing the elderly and poor couple. He also instructed the secretary to waive off the tax for lifetime, given the weak financial distress of the family.

Babu Rao, Panchayat Raj Secretary of Kukuda village in neighbouring Bejjur mandal, was given additional charges of the village.

Cheekati informed former Sirpur (T) MLA P Purshottam Rao’s son Harish Rao during the latter’s padayatra in Karjavelli village recently. Harish, in turn, suggested to his friend Sudheer to help the couple by bringing it to the notice of officials concerned.
