Hyderabad: Health Minister Dr C Laxma Reddy on Thursday urged people to inculcate the habit of donating blood on days that are important to them in their lives.
Stating that he donates blood for needy patients every year on his birthday, Dr Reddy said, “I also encourage my family members to donate blood and even organise blood donation camps”.
Speaking at a programme on blood donation organised by TS AIDS Control Society on the occasion of World Blood Donor Day here, he suggested people should develop this habit and they can pick birthdays, anniversaries or any other important day for it.
“There is a demand for nearly 4 lakh units of blood every year. However, only 60 per cent of the demand is met through blood donations. To be able to meet this deficit, every healthy individual should make blood donation a part of their lives,” Dr. Reddy said.
The programme organised on the lines of this year’s theme ‘Be there for someone else: give blood share life’, at Nizam College Grounds also featured a rally flagged off by the Health Minister.
The Minister pointed out that donating blood frequently will also go a long way in saving the lives of pregnant anaemic women in Government hospitals. Director of TS AIDS Control Society, Preeti Meena and senior officials were present.
