Since his election campaign in 2014, when some of his detractors thought it smart to take a jibe at him by reminding people of his roots as a tea seller, Prime Minister has made chai something to be proud of. His followers cheerfully gave away hundreds of litres of chai to people upon his coming to power in May that year. Since then, he left no stone unturned in making chai the talk of the globe.

Back home, tea connoisseur Salman Tayyebi started a fine tea lounge years ago at Tolichowki to give Hyderabadis a whiff of the aromas of ‘real tea’, which is to say, tea as it was originally made by the Chinese, before the British came around adding milk to the concoction, leading to gastric issues and what not. Finjaan is a fine tea lounge, now located at Banjara Hills near the GVK Mall and the Consulate of Iran, where one gets to enjoy and buy (for taking home) some amazing teas in their authentic form as imported from Japan, China and Assam.

Says MA Aleem, a resident of Ameerpet and a regular at Finjaan, “I was sold the first time I visited Finjaan. That was three years ago, and since then, I have been having a cup of green tea every morning, bought only from Finjaan. Plus, I use the beautiful glass tea pots they sell, along with pristine cups and saucers made purely of glass. It’s an experience to relish. It’s completely different from the Irani chai served in a ceramic cup. The way the tea leaves change colour and open up, the tea flower buds bloom – it’s all a refreshingly beautiful experience,” he says.

For clarification; no Irani chai is served at Finjaan, although one could argue that the Consulate of Iran is right in front of it. There are red teas, Darjeeling teas, green teas, white teas, natural black teas, yellow teas, Sikkim teas, Ginger teas, and Iced teas. But hold on; these are just the names of the categories – each one has many unique offerings within it! Now, need we say more?
