Cherry blossom festival is the number one tourist attraction in Japan. Come spring, and you can see travellers from across the globe flocking to places where this flower blooms for a short period of time. These white to pale pink flowers define floral beauty and transform the surroundings to a mystical land from books.
Though cherry blossom is the national flower of Japan, there are other places where one can witness this breathtaking sight.
It is lesser-known fact for Indians too, that there country plays host to this flower. The capital city of Meghalaya is the only place in India where cherry blossom festival is conducted during winter months. Angang, a resident of Nagaland, says, “Well, I hope they organise it this year too. Last year the festival was conducted in November and the pictures from the festival looked amazing. I am sure in person, they are even more spectacular.” She further adds, “A lot of people know about this festival and make it a point to go to the city during this time. Why travel far when you can experience the same in your own country? Especially, Shillong is beautiful by itself and cherry blossom is an added advantage.”
Parc de Sceaux, France is known for two types of orchards – white and pink – that grow here. Bonn Altstadt is famous for the cherry blossom festival in Germany. Apart from this, Netherlands too has 400 trees, each having its own name. In Amstelveen 200 trees have Japanese women’s names and the other 200 have Dutch women’s names.
