Hyderabad: The alleged ‘honour killing’ attempt on Sandeep and Madhavi was pre-planned and Madhavi’s father Manohara Chary had allegedly played a compromise drama to gain the confidence of the couple before the brutal attack.
With their elders not approving of their love, Sandeep and Madhavi, both degree final year students, had enrolled their details with the Arya Samaj last month and got married last Wednesday.
After their wedding, the couple started staying at Sandeep’s house in Prem Nagar, Erragadda. Learning about this, Chary, two days ago, came to the couple’s house with a proposal of compromise.
“He, along with some elders, local opinion leaders and the groom’s family, sat down and worked out a compromise. Sandeep’s family had also told him to take away his daughter if he wants and that they would convince their child. But, he acted pious and claimed to have accepted their marriage,” police said, adding that during that meeting both the parties had settled their issues.
However, on Wednesday evening at around 3.30 pm, Manohara Chary called the couple over phone and asked them to come to Erragadda for a discussion.
“The couple thought things have now been sorted out and readily agreed. They are suspected to have also been excited and were expecting a bike as a wedding present from him as the spot was near an automobile showroom,” a source said.
The couple reached the spot on a scooter, with Sandeep riding it. Within few minutes, Manohara Chary too arrived on his bike carrying a bag with a sickle hidden in it.
“The couple was still sitting on their scooter, when Manohara Chary removed his helmet, put the bike on stand, took out the sickle from the bag and suddenly started attacking them in broad daylight and in full public view,” police said.
He first attacked Sandeep on his face and when he tried to hack him again, he left the scooter and escaped. On the other hand, Madhavi came to her husband’s rescue and pushed her father aside to stop him from attacking.
According to the SR Nagar police, her father, who was already in a rage, also started attacking Madhavi who had fallen on the road resulting in deep bleeding injuries on her neck, hands and other parts of the body. The locals too were scared to stop him.
“He was brandishing the sickle against passersby who came to stop him or attempted to rescue the couple. Due to the fear of being attacked, nobody went close. It took some time for the locals to figure out what exactly happened. Manohara Chary fled the spot after the attack,” police said.
The locals immediately shifted the couple to Neelima Hospital in Sanathnagar, from where Madhavi, who was critical, was shifted to Yashoda Hospital in Somajiguda for better treatment.
