Maoists announce unilateral ceasefire due to coronavirus

Hyderabad: Maoists have announced a unilateral ceasefire and announced that they would not be attacking the security forces in view of the fast spread of coronavirus in the country.

A terse statement to this effect was issued by Kailasam, who identified himself as secretary of the Malkangiri – Koraput – Visakha Divisional Committee (MKVDC) on Sunday. The statement handwritten in Telugu was circulated to various media organisations.

Kailasam maintained that the CPI (Maoist) workers, members of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) and different people’s organisations would desist from launching attacks on security forces. “However, we will retaliate if there is any attack from the security forces”, Kailasam asserted and sought to know the response of the Government to the unilateral ceasefire move from the Maoists side.

In a separate statement issued, Kailasam urged people to think as to who unleashed the coronavirus on people. The coronavirus, is a result of the imperialist and bourgeoise forces in the world, who wanted to loot the mineral wealth from forest areas. The Maoist leader urged people to realise that such disasters like coronavirus affliction would continue to happen as long as the exploitative political system was in vogue. He accused the political parties of inaction in controlling the virus by only insisting on sacrifices to be made by people only.

In some handwritten posters pinned to trees in Visakhapatnam agencies areas, the Maoists have urged people to take utmost precautions like washing their hands repeatedly. The Maoists urged people not to shake hands and to wear masks as much as possible. They urged people not to gather in groups but to maintain social distancing and also to avoid attending marriages, functions. The Maoists said people should seek medical help if they had any symptoms like cough, cold and fever. The other precautions listed out included not to spit in open areas, maintaining hygiene in villages, drinking boiled water and keeping distance from vulnerable groups like old people.
