Hyderabad: With drug peddlers getting increasingly active in and around the city, the Rachakonda Police is planning to strengthen its cover on the city outskirts especially, those leading to agency areas in Visakhapatnam.

The Commissionerate has already warmed up its intelligence sources, besides passing on special instructions to all security personnel to keep a tight vigil on the drug mafia.

“This business is a very serious issue and plans are being drawn to cut down on drug smuggling. Given the present alarming condition, the Commissionerate is planning to be more vigilant, strengthening its security cover on the city outskirts,” said Mahesh M Bhagwat, Commissioner, Rachakonda.

Over the last six months, the Rachakonda police has seized nearly 2,000 quintals of contraband material. It has also started focusing on the seizure of properties of offenders.

Earlier cases have indicated that the smugglers were receiving huge financial support from various resources, the Commissioner said.

“That is why we have decided to seize properties owned by drug peddlers. This approach has so far helped in curtailing repeated offenders from returning to the trade,” he said.

Meanwhile, Cyberabad being a hub for various educational institutions, the department is strengthening its intelligence network to keep a constant eye on college students.

“Our security personnel have been asked to keep a tight vigil on potential buyers among students. Those in engineering colleges and other graduate level courses are being watched very closely,” said Sandeep Shandilya, Cyberabad Commissioner.
