Medak: A check dam constructed across river Manjeera at Kuchanpally village of Havelighanpur Mandal in Medak district has started overflowing since Sunday.

Political Secretary to Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and MLC Sheri Subhash Reddy, who hails from Kuchanpally village, got it constructed on priority by getting Rs 15 crore fund from the Irrigation Department. Though there were no inflows into Manjeera from upstream, the river started flowing in Medak district following rains in and around Medak during the past four days. As the water stored for over 2 km in the check dam, the farmers felt that it would recharge the groundwater table in the area.

Several borewells had gone dry in these parts of Medak district during the summer due to over-exploitation. However, the farmers were hoping that with the storage of water in the check dam, things would look up. Farmers from over a dozen villages are expected to benefit from the check dam. Though the State government granted funds for the construction of 14 check dams across river Manjeera and Haldi Vagu, Kuchanpally check dam alone was completed since Subhash Reddy got it done on priority ahead of the rains. The local farmers thanked the Chief Minister and Subhash Reddy for their efforts.
