Hyderabad: Yet another record appears to have been logged in by Hyderabad Metro Rail with nearly 2 lakh riders on first day of its commercial operations.
Elated over the response, Municipal Administration Minister K T Rama Rao tweeted, “Delighted that Hyderabadis have welcomed Hyderabad Metro in a big way”. In another tweet later, he said, ” I am told it’s more than 2 lakhs”.
Braving the wintry morning chill, Hyderabadis eager to realise their long-cherished dream of a metro ride thronged the stations from 5.15 am though the first train service was scheduled at 6 am. The crowds swelled as the day progressed and by noon, HMR estimates suggested that over 22,000 people had travelled on trains between Miyapur and Nagole.
Late afternoon saw more people flocking the stations and around 6 pm packed trains were seen chugging along. Between Miyapur and Ameerpet, seven trains covered the 13 km stretch with a frequency of 8 minutes, while the 17 km stretch between Ameerpet and Nagole had another seven trains operated with 15 minutes frequency.
Allowing time for passengers to get tuned to the operations of the new service, the trains were run slow, took a little longer pauses than scheduled and logged an average time of 23 minutes to cover Miyapur-Ameerpet stretch while the distance between Ameerpet-Nagole was covered in 40 minutes.
The new public transportation system took off without any major glitches as compared to other cities where in one instance, the inaugural train had doors refusing to open.”It has been an incident-free operation today and by 10 pm we expect over 1 lakh passengers,” said HMRL Managing Director N V S Reddy.
No other metro on its first day of operations had clocked such numbers and HMR, which already boasts of a record inaugural run of 30 kms, clearly had a case of staking claim for another record.
At the 24 stations that dot the metro line, despite large crowds, not a single unsavoury incident was reported. All across, passengers were orderly and as an official added, “disciplined in using the metro rail”.
