Hyderabad: Dr. G Gopal Reddy, Member, University Grants Commission (UGC), highlighted the importance of collaboration between private sector and public sector institutions particularly in the area of research.
Both these institutions played an important role in providing quality education to the young population of the country and should complement each other in this effort, he said while addressing senior members of the ICFAI University.
While appreciating the role of private universities he said that private universities are fulfilling an important role in filling the gap between what public sector educational institutions can do and the demand for higher education in the country.
Dr. Gopal Reddy traced the development of the education infrastructure in India from 20 universities and 200 degree colleges at the time of independence to 800 universities, 40,000 colleges and 100 institutions of higher learning at present. However, the gross enrolment ratio was still at 25 per cent, which needs further improvement, he stated.
He said that the faculty members played an important role in imparting values among students. Good quality teaching and mentoring by faculty members will keep the students focused on studies and self-development, he opined.
Dr. J. Mahender Reddy, Vice-Chancellor, ICFAI University spoke about the development of the University over the years and highlighted the contribution made by the University in the area of imparting quality education as well as research, especially case research.
