Hyderabad: The full-fledged campus of Government Medical College, Mahabubnagar, the first medical college to be established in Telangana after its Statehood will be inaugurated by the IT Minister, KT Rama Rao and Health Minister, Eatala Rajender, on Monday.
Spread over a 50 acre campus in Edira village, nine kilometres from Mahabubnagar town, the medical college building has come up at a cost of Rs 130 crore while the entire campus is being developed with a budgetary allocation of Rs 450 crore.
“In August, 2015, the State government issued essentiality certificate to start 150 MBBS seats and by December, 2015, we had identified the campus at Edira to develop infrastructure,” says Director, Government Medical College, Mahabubnagar, Dr Putta Srinivas.
The first MBBS batch of 150 students was launched in August, 2016 within the campus of Mahabubnagar Government Hospital as a temporary arrangement. At present there are 625 MBBS students from 2016-17 to 2019-20 academic years. In the 2019-20 academic year, thanks to the introduction of the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) scheme, 25 more medical seats were added, increasing total strength to 175 MBBS seats.
“This year, MCI has already conducted inspections and we are confident that our MBBS seats will be enhanced to 200 from the coming academic year. Due to Covid pandemic, this academic year has been delayed but we are hoping to start by September /October,” Dr Srinivas said.
A lot of thinking went into developing the campus in such a way that all the needs of the students were met, he said. “We needed only 25 acres of land but the government provided us 50 acres, so that future needs are also taken care of,” he added.
The Mahabubnagar Medical College campus comes fully equipped with top class infrastructure including hostels for girls and boys, faculty living quarters, nursing quarters, a state-of-the-art mess for faculty and students, separate gymnasiums for girls and boys, staying quarters for security personnel, etc.
