Sangareddy: Sarvodaya Grama Seva Foundation (SGSF), an NGO established by a team of doctors and income tax officials, set up Mini Sports Academies in three Zila Parishad High schools for students. The SGSF had set up mini-libraries in the same three schools in the past.
The Sports Academies, which will have facilities for training in basketball, cricket, volleyball, badminton, chess and Carrom, will have a coach to train the students in different sports.
Speaking to Telangana Today, SGSF founder Dr Sudhakar Nayak, an IRS officer, said India was not doing well in sports on the global platform despite being the second-most populous country in the world. “There is no dearth of talent in rural parts of the country,” Dr Nayak said, adding that the foundation’s objective was to train rural children in various sports disciplines from a very young age.
Each of these three sports academies will have two cricket nets, a basketball facility, a badminton ground, a volleyball ground, chess and carrom board facilities. The IRS officer said the foundation had spent Rs 1.5 lakh on each of these academies so far. While the academies at Zilla Parishad High School Hanumantharaopet and Nizampet, both located in Narayankhed mandal, will be inaugurated on Saturday, the third academy, which is also ready for inauguration, will be opened on December 26. Apart from appointing trained coaches, experts in these sports disciplines will be invited to identify the inherent talent among the students and train them, he said.
N Ramulu, the headmaster of Nizampet High School, thanked SGSF for creating such a wonderful sports facility in the school. Pointing out that sports will not only keep the children fit, the headmaster said they will also make the students excel in studies as well.
Vijay Kumar, a teacher, said: “From the day the library was set up in our school, there has been a perceptible change in the students since we are also conducting competitions like elocution, essay writing, book review and others.” Kumar hoped that the sports academy will make the students better persons since playing sports will cultivate team spirit and improve leadership qualities among the children.
