Hyderabad: National BC Welfare Association president R Krishnaiah on Monday said the Telangana government seemed to be in a hurry to conduct the Zilla Parishad and Mandal Parishad elections.

“There is no need to conduct the local body elections hurriedly because there is so much of time left for that,” he said. “BCs will be at the losing end if reservations are reduced to 22 per cent from 34 per cent. It’s not correct to conduct the local body elections without increasing the reservations for BCs,” he said.

The Supreme Court said reservation should be given to BCs proportionate to their population and 34 per cent reservation should continue as it is, Krishnaiah said. There is a not even 10 per cent reservation for BCs in districts such as Khammam, Bhadrachalam, Kothagudem and Adilabad, he said, adding that the case pertaining to this issue was in the High Court.
