Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is gearing up to strengthen its efforts to better implement the ban on plastic bags below 50 microns in the city from March 10. As part of these efforts, all the plastic manufacturers have been directed by the GHMC to register their names with respective Deputy Commissioners by March 18.

During a meeting with manufacturers and traders here on Saturday, Mayor Bonthu Rammohan and GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy instructed them to handover the plastic carry bags below 50 microns to GHMC officials before March 10 to avoid any penalty.

Manufacturers and commercial establishments have been directed to follow the rules strictly, failing which severe action, including seizure of their manufacturing units etc., will be initiated, GHMC officials said.

Hyderabad Mayor said special counters in all the circle and zonal offices will be opened for the convenience of manufacturers, traders, to register their names in their respective circles and zones.

It has been observed that more than 800 plastic manufacturing and trading units are existing under GHMC limits out of which only about 10 per cent traders have been registered in GHMC.

The GHMC is planning to deploy 30 Environmental Engineers along with 300 Enforcement staff to conduct raids on units, which failed to register their names with the GHMC.
