Hyderabad: Telangana Minister KT Rama Rao now has one million followers on Twitter.

Rao joined Twitter in March 2010 with the handle @ktrtrs, during the separate Telangana movement. He expressed his views explicitly to emphasize on the need for a separate State and had also hinted at backdoor politics adopted by those working against interests of the Telangana region. But he started using the Twitter handle to its best after taking oath as a Minister.

The number of Twitter followers of the ’@KTRTRS’ handle was just around 40,000 during the GHMC elections held three years ago. It was then that people noticed his active responses on social media and the number of followers began growing phenomenally, finally touching the one million mark late night on Thursday – a feat only a few politicians have achieved in a period of less than two years.

Giving a new twist to e-governance, the Minister has been quick in addressing grievances from people and is using Twitter as an effective tool of administration. Be it the flooding of Hyderabad during rains, bad roads or overflowing nalas in the GHMC area, or requests for help to the needy, he attends to them all and issues necessary orders to his staff. This, according to those working with him, has taken him closer to the people.

Take for instance the case of Beejan Bee, a 70-year-old who was reportedly denied her old-age pension. Twitteratti took it to the notice of Rao on August 1 evening last year and he ensured that the issue was addressed by the Vikarabad collector within a few hours. The officials visit Beejan Bee and handed over Rs 15,000 including pension arrears which was later termed as ‘Governance at doorstep of citizens’ by Rao himself.

Surprisingly, the Minister has also reacted to SOS sent from natives of neighbouring States. When Robin Zaccheus from Odisha reached out to him on Twitter and sought help for his colleague Rashmita Putel from Odisha who met with an accident, Rama Rao reacted within seconds even before Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and his office responded. The minister got around Rs 6-7 lakh released from Telangana CMRF towards treatment expenses and directed his staff to personally monitor the situation.

Rama Rao also uses social media as a public interaction platform, besides taking on his political opponents on their allegations. His team members including officials also are made to become active on Twitter. “He is very particular about complaints from people and expects an update after the officials resolve them,” said one of his official team members as Rao’s Twitter handle inched towards the one million followers mark on Thursday night.

Rao personally monitors his Twitter handle and is often seen checking tweets whenever he gets time in between attending official work. He updates people about his official programmes besides sharing glimpses of his personal life.

A self-confessed Calvin and Hobbes fan, he also gives his followers glimpses of his witty side which is a hit among many. Rao also had a chat session with his followers recently in December last where he shared his views on everything – from girlfriends to God. Though he has got a million followers now, he follows just 59 Twitter handles, mostly those which post inspirational quotes.
