Hyderabad: The Congress party was the only political entity that has protected and will continue to do so in the interest of minority communities including Muslims, Telangana Congress president N Uttam Kumar Reddy said. His assurance came during an interaction with party workers on Facebook in Mancherial on Wednesday.

Uttam Kumar Reddy, currently leading the Congress’ Praja Chaitanya Bus Yatra, also greeted Muslims for the beginning of the holy month of Ramzan from Thursday. He said the Congress believes that all sections of society, including Muslims, should get equal opportunities for growth and prosperity.

On Muslims in Telangana State, he accused Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao of “cheating the community on the promise of 12 per cent reservation.” He said that not a single promise made to the community was fulfilled by the Chief Minister. It is still the 4 per cent reservation for Muslims brought into force by previous Congress government that is still under implementation, he said, adding that the 4 per cent quota implemented by Congress enabled lakhs of Muslims get admission into prestigious colleges and provide the community its share in all government jobs.

Uttam Kumar also alleged that the TRS government had cheated STs too in the name of 12 per cent reservation. He said that the promise of enhancement of quota for STs and Muslims has remained unimplemented for the last four years and the Chief Minister was not in a position to explain the exact status of the Reservation Bill which was passed in the Assembly and sent to the Centre.

Thanking people for their support for the party’s bus yatra, Uttam Kumar said that so far, the tour had covered 35 Assembly constituencies and elicited tremendous public response.
