Hyderabad: Demanding extensive Covid-19 testing in the State, the Congress and the CPI expressed solidarity with the one-day deeksha observed by Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) chief Prof Kodandaram at his party office here on Thursday.
Leaders of the two parties also supported Kodandaram’s demand for a white paper on the government’s expenditure on mitigating the coronavirus and donations it received through the Chief Minister Relief Fund (CMRF). “The government must extend Rs 7,500 financial assistance to every poor family,” Kodandaram said. He attributed the spurt in Covid cases in the State to the failure of the government.
TPCC working president Ponnam Prabhakar said that the State was conducting fewer tests ignoring the High Court’s directions. “While the WHO has been telling governments to follow the test, trace and treat norm, the Telangana government is ignoring it,” Ponnam said. He demanded that the State government convert the old Secretariat into an exclusive corona hospital.
Meanwhile, Yuvajana Congress president Anil Yadav and party Nampally in charge Feroz Khan were taken into custody by the police when they tried to protest in front of the old Secretariat. They demanded that the government not demolish it and instead convert it into a 10,000-bed hospital.
CPI State secretary Chada Venkatreddy said that the Centre and State governments had failed in controlling the spread of the virus. “The helplines that the State government said to have established are not working. The government is refusing to accept our demand for more tests,” he said.
