Hyderabad: Seven years after its last recruitment drive, Osmania University is once opening its gates to new staff. The university, which is facing a severe dearth of permanent teaching staff members, is all set to soon issue notifications for recruitment to 415 vacancies of faculty posts, including 219 associate professor and 121 assistant professor posts.
The varsity is in the process of finalizing the procedure for recruitment. With the University Grants Commission clearing the air on the reservation policy to be followed by higher educational institutions, the rationalization of posts has been completed.
“The rosters points are also finalized. There are 415 vacancies, among which 15 are caught in a legal issue. If that’s cleared in a week, they will also be notified or else notification for 400 posts will be issued in a week or 10 days,” OU Vice-Chancellor Prof. S Ramachandram told Telangana Today.
The varsity has close to 1,200 sanctioned posts, half of which were lying vacant due to superannuation of teaching staff members. The university last held a recruitment drive in 2012, when about 170 teaching posts were filled.
Nod in 2018
The executive council, the highest decision making body in the university, had last year given its nod for recruitment to vacant posts. However, it was delayed due to the reservation policy issue. As per directions of the Allahabad High Court, the UGC had directed all HEIs to consider department or subject as unit instead of university or college while giving reservation for SC/ST or OBCs in recruitment. This was staunchly opposed by certain sections, stating that it would deprive them of teaching posts.
Recently, the Central government passed an ordinance restoring university or college as unit, following which the UGC issued orders directing all universities to start the recruitment process and complete it within six months.
After the formation of Telangana, the government permitted recruitment to 1,061 posts in 11 universities, including OU, Kakatiya University, Telangana University, Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies, Dr. BR Ambedkar Open University and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad among others. The JNTU-H has already notified 32 professor posts and plans to issue notifications for 154 posts of associate and assistant professors by this month.
