Hyderabad: Twenty five students of Osmania University College of Engineering Collegiate Club ‘Society of Automotive Engineers, India’ have successfully designed and fabricated ‘XLR8’, a Formula Racing Car.
The racing car is all set to take part in the Supra SAEINDIA, a national level super racing competition being held at Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.
The vehicle is powered by a 43.5 BHP single cylinder four stroke petrol engine of 390 cc which can give a top speed of 170 kmph. It weighs 240 kg and is stable and promises to deliver good performance and comfort to the drivers.
The team comprised students of second, third, and final year of BE programme headed by the captain, Abhinav Venkat, vice-captain Haritha while Akash Vardhana and Saharsha are pilots of the vehicle. About eight girl students took key responsibilities in building the vehicle, the team said.
The racing car project which was conceptualised in November 2018 with a design and development budget of Rs 10 lakh initially faced financial constraints. Later, it got accelerated with Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited, Telangana State Pollution Control Board and alumni of the Mechanical Engineering Department extending financial assistance.
Faculty advisor, Dr V Uma Maheshwar said the design and development work was taken up in February 2019 and in a record time of four months, students fabricated the racing car. “For the first time, the students of OUCE have designed and fabricated a Formula Racing Car,” he said.
OU, Vice-Chancellor, S Ramachamdram, OUCE, Principal, Molugaram Kumar, OUCE, Department of Mechanical Engineering, head, P Ramesh Babu, and faculty, P Usha Sri lauded the efforts of students in designing and fabricating the Formula Racing Car in a record time.
