Hyderabad: Close to 200 nurses working on outsourcing basis at Gandhi Hospital boycotted their regular Covid duties and participated in a dharna in front of the Director of Medical Education (DME) office at Koti on Friday.

The nurses maintained they have been working at the hospital for the past 13 years and it is time the government should regularise them.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the health authorities recruited staff nurses with work experience of five years for Gandhi Hospital with a salary of Rs 25, 000. However, the already existing nurses, who have been working at the hospital for the past 13 years were drawing a salary of Rs.17,500, said president, TS Medical Contract Employees and Workers Union, (Gandhi Hospital unit Nursing Staff), M Narasimha.

“It is a positive step from the State government to recruit staff nurses on a permanent basis for Gandhi Hospital. However, there are over 200 staff nurses at Gandhi Hospital who are more experienced but are drawing less salary than the recently recruited nurses. We urge the State government to address this imbalance,” he said.
