Warangal Urban: The authorities of the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) will conduct a special drive to identify street vendors and hawkers under the corporation limits to provide affordable loans of up to Rs 10,000 under PM Svanidhi or Pradhan Mantri Street Vendor’s Atma Nirbhar Nidhi scheme.
The scheme was announced by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on May 14 to enable street vendors resume their activities and earn their livelihood which was hit hard by the nation-wide lockdown imposed to check the pandemic Covid-19.
Under the scheme, vendors can avail working capital loan of up to Rs 10,000, which is repayable in monthly installments within one year. On timely or early repayment of the loan, an interest subsidy of 7 per cent per annum will be credited to the bank accounts of beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) on a six-month basis. There will be no penalty on early repayment of loan.
Director General, National Institute of Plant Health Management (NIPHM) G Jayalakshmi recently conducted a video conference with the municipal commissioners and directed the GWMC commissioner Pamela Satpathy to take steps to provide the loan to vendors and hawkers after identifying them and also consulting the bankers.
On July 17, District Collector Rajiv Gandhi Hanumanthu held a meeting with the civic body officials and expressed his anger over them for the slow progress in the identification of the street vendors and hawkers. According to the official sources, only 2155 street vendors/hawkers were given the loan and they were also issued identity cards. “We have identified only 5500 vendors/hawkers so far. In view of this, the Collector has asked us to expedite the process and issue the loans to all the eligible vendors. The vendors have to make applications online to receive the loans,” an official said. Two percent of the population under the GWMC limits can be given a Rs 10,000 loan under the scheme
