Hyderabad: The Hyderabad City Police is in a not-so-enviable first position in the State with 1,967 of its personnel testing positive for Covid-19, followed by the Warangal and Rachakonda Police with 526 and 287 police personnel respectively.
In all, 5,684 police personnel have tested positive so far after the outbreak of the virus while the force lost 43 of its warriors to Covid-19. Of the total cases, 3,357 cases were active while 2,284 were recovered and discharged. Around 1,593 persons have already reported back to duty, police sources said.
Out of 1,967 personnel affected in the City Police, 23 persons died. Apart from personnel with the Special Branch, Traffic Wing and City Security Wing (CSW), the Banjara Hills, Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar and Shahinayathgunj police stations were the worst affected.
Police sources said the most police personnel contracted the virus while discharging duty during the lockdown. A majority of them were posted at several make-shift check-posts that were set up at strategic locations by putting up barricades to ensure that people did not violate the lockdown. The staff was posted at the check-posts round-the-clock and in the process came in contact with Covid-19 carriers, they said.
Another major share of the cases were among Sub-Inspectors and constables who worked relentlessly to shift migrant workers to their native places during the lockdown. After the lockdown was lifted, the number of cases dipped as most of the staff were confined to police station duty apart from carrying out patrolling in police vehicles.
Police sources said some staff also got affected via their family members and relatives. Following a spike in the number of cases, the Traffic Police stopped issuing spot challans to violators and started relying on images captured by surveillance cameras installed at the intersections.
With respect to treatment, officials said the department was taking necessary steps to ensure proper treatment at the designated Covid-19 hospitals in the State. Some employees in the department underwent treatment in corporate hospitals.
