Hyderabad: There is no doubt. There is no dissent. A lockdown is what the city needs right now was the majority opinion on Monday, a day after the State government announced plans of another lockdown in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits given the sharp rise in the number of Covid-19 cases.

Most felt that a strict lockdown was the only solution to rein in the surging number of cases. The only difference of opinion was whether it should be for 15 days or for 30 days.

“Initially, we saw a little bit of discipline among people about maintaining physical distance and wearing masks. However, most appear to have forgotten all that if we look at the rush in fish markets, vegetable markets and groceries these days. If this is how it is, a lockdown is the only way out,” says Srinivas Reddy, who works for a software firm.

However, there are some who are skeptical about how long the next lockdown should be and the number of restrictions that are likely to come along with it. Most of these are merchants and small scale vendors, who are still reeling from the impact of the previous lockdown.

“We have been struggling financially since March. We are barely doing business and if another lockdown is imposed, it will become tougher for us. We are not against a lockdown, but we should be allowed to open our shops for at least six hours,” some traders said.

Meanwhile, though there was no major rush in most shops, there were still many customers seen stocking up on essentials and other goods in groceries and supermarkets in the city on Monday. Shopkeepers expect the rush to intensify soon, and if the recent past is any indication, panic buying is not being ruled out by most.
