Hyderabad: Girls dominated the Telangana Sailing Regatta sub-junior event as top five spots were won by girls with Preethi Kongara from Yacht Club of Hyderabad being the top winner at Hussainsagar on Friday.
Lakshmi Nookarathnam bagged the silver medal and almost lost it to Jhansi Priya Laveti when she finished 18th position while Jhansi won the last race, taking the competition down to the wire. Preethi secured seven wins out of 12 races and was 35 points ahead of her nearest rival.
In the boys category, Mahesh Gudde from Mahabubnagar won the gold while Ajay Gajji and Karthick Neenavath bagged the silver and bronze medals respectively. Sirisha Kerre from Mahabubnagar finished seventh in overall championship and bagged the most promising sailor (girl) award while Harshavardhan won the award in the boys category.
“I have been associated with the sport for around 50 years. But I have never seen such precision performances by girls who seem to have some magical understanding with the wind shifts of Hussainsagar”, said Lt Gen KS Rao, president of the Telangana Sailing Association
“It feels great to have some good sailing. But the challenge lies ahead at the Monsoon Regatta where the entire national fleet from Bhopal, Bengaluru, Chennai and Mumbai will be here. Our sailors need to perform well,” said Suheim Sheikh, coach and president of the Yacht Club of Hyderabad.

Girls: 1. Preethi Kongara, 2. Lakshmi Nookarathnam, 3. Jhansi Priya Laveti, 4. Ravali Parandi, 5. Dharani Laveti.
