Hyderabad: Hundreds of transgender, intersex and gender non-confirming people along with their allies came together in New Delhi on Parliament Street on Sunday morning to protest against the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2016, scheduled to be tabled in the Winter Session of the Parliament.
Waves of protests across States over the last week marked the solidarity of the trans activists, who converged at Sansad Marg in the national capital to build pressure on the lawmakers for a rethink on the Bill.
More than 100 trans activists from the Telugu States were set to join the protests.
Trans activists say the Bill does not help the community, and is, in its current draft, even ‘draconian’ for members of the community as it allegedly institutionalises discrimination against transgender persons.
Communist Party of India (CPI) national secretary D Raja and All India Progressive Women’s Association (AIPWA) secretary Kavita Krishnan joined the protests and pledged their support, as did members of several student organisations.
“No one can tell you who you are. Go ahead and raise your voice. Let us see how sensitive the Parliament really is to the concerns of the people,” said Raja.
Telangana Hijra Transgender Samiti member M Chandramukhi said the 2014 Nalsa judgement by the Supreme Court must be implemented in the interest of the transgender community.
From the time the Bill was modified last year, trans activists have taken strong exception to several provisions of the Bill, which they termed ‘regressive’. Among these are the definition of the word transgender as neither male nor female, lack of any reservation for the community, mandatory certification by health officers for identity proof, and criminal proceedings for begging or sex work.
The Supreme Court in its Nalsa judgement had recommended reservations and the right to self-identity for the welfare of the community.
