Karimnagar: The alleged torture of Dalits by Rajanna-Sircilla district police is snowballing into a big controversy. Political parties, Dalit organisations and human rights activists are demanding action against the police.

While the family members of the victims — from Nerella, Thangallapalli manda — are seeking justice, the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party and Dalit organisations want the government to suspend Superintendent of Police K Vishwajeet and SI Ravinder.

TPCC working president Mallu Batti Vikramarka, along with Jagitial MLA T Jeevan Reddy, on Wednesday visited the district headquarters hospital where the victims have been undergoing treatment in prisons ward during the last five days.

Speaking to reporters, Vikramarka demanded the State government appoint a High Court sitting judge to probe the case. The family members said that the police did not reveal the whereabouts of the victims despite their repeated requests. Moreover, the SP abused them when they met him, they alleged.

No response

BJP State leader Bandi Sanjay asked them to file a petition in the High Court as there was no response from the Director General of Police and the State Human Rights Commission with whom they had already lodged a complaint. Besides threatening them, the victims were also administered painkillers ahead of producing them before the judge, he alleged.

Referring to the SP’s comments that the police had acted according to the law, Sanjay questioned as to why they (victims) were undergoing treatment in hospital and why the jail authorities refused to give admission to victims when they were taken to jail for the first time on July 8.

Seeking action

Stating that the victims were not provided better treatment in hospital, he demanded that they be shifted to NIMS.  The government should register SC/ST atrocities against the SP for abusing the family member of the victims with caste name, he demanded.

Ambedkar Yuvajana Sangham president Gajjela Kantham too sought action under the SC and ST Atrocities Act against the SP.
