Protests over Muslim quota rock Karimnagar

Karimnagar: Karimnagar on Monday reverberated with pro and anti-Muslim reservation slogans with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress leaders staging protests and counter protests.

While BJP staged a dharna at the Collectorate in protest against the government’s plans to provide reservations to Muslims in education and employment, Youth Congress leaders staged a rasta roko at Telangana Chowk demanding the implementation of Sudheer Commission recommendations.

Police and BJP workers jostled when the latter tried to gatecrash into the Collectorate. Police arrested the protesters and shifted them to the police station. The BJP workers alleged that with an eye on Muslim vote bank, the State government was doing injustice to the backward classes by providing 12 reservations to Muslims. They demanded the government to withdraw its plans.

On the other hand, vehicular traffic on Jagtial and Vemulawada routes came to a standstill with Youth Congress activists staging a rasta roko at Telangana Chowk.

Chief Minister K Chandrasekahar Rao, who promised to provide 12 percent reservation to Muslims, three acres land to dalits, KG to PG free education, has forgotten his assurances after coming to power, said the Youth Congress activists. They demanded that the Chief Minister step down from his post if he is unable to implement his poll promises. Police arrested the leaders and shifted them to a police station.
