Public participation must for success of scheme: Jagadish Reddy

The Minister said there was an immediate need to check air pollution by planting saplings.

Suryapet: Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy on Monday said that there was a need for public participation in the Pattana Pragathi programme, which was aimed at creating a healthy atmosphere in towns in addition to their development.

Launching the 10-day Pattana Pragathi programme in ward 2 of Suryapet municipality, Minister said the Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had designed Pattana Pragathi programme to change the face of towns by improving sanitation, roads, street lights and other amenities. Under the programme, the municipalities will get fixed amount of funds every month. The officials, elected representatives and people should work together to ensure that Suryapet gets the top spot in the State in implementation of Pattana Pragathi programme.

Stating that cases of respiratory problems among people was increasing in towns due to air pollution, the Minister said there was an immediate need to check air pollution by planting saplings. Six saplings should be planted in each house by the people in towns based on availability of space. He mooted the idea of bringing a rule to mandate planting of saplings to accord permission from municipalities for construction of new houses. The municipalities should focus on nurturing of saplings, which were planted as part of Telangana Ku Haritha Haram. In addition to this, people should be educated towards setting up of water harvesting pits at their houses in the town, he added.

Expressing happiness over the enthusiasm shown by the people to participate in Pattana Pragathi programme in Suryapet, he said that the people of second ward assured him of planting one sapling in every home. Enlisting the priorities of Pattana Pragathi programme, Reddy said environmental protection as first priority and sanitation as second priority of the programme. He opined that Pattana Pragathi would also help the newly elected councilors to fulfill their promises made during elections.

The Minister also announced that Rs 20 lakhs would be sanctioned for development of graveyard in ward 2 and also laid the foundation stone for CC roads in the ward on the occasion.
