Hyderabad: The year-long celebrations of former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao’s birth centenary began in Columbus, Ohio, in the US on Sunday, kick-starting the first ever programme to be conducted by the celebration committee constituted by the Telangana government outside the country.
According to a statement issued by T Mahesh Rao, TRS (NRI) Advisory Chairman, those who participated in the meeting included PV centenary celebrations organising committee chairman K Keshava Rao, member Mahesh Bigala and Vani and Saraswathi, daughters of Narasimha Rao. The programme in which several Indians participated through video conference was telecast by TV Asia (Telugu) channel in that country.
“Narasimha Rao has no match in knowledge, drafting policies, administration and intellect. He was the man who unveiled a new India to the whole world by bringing in far-reaching economic reforms. The government must confer Bharat Ratna on him,” Keshava Rao said, adding that he will raise the issue in Parliament. “Memorials will be built in Hyderabad and Vangara, the native place of the former Prime Minister. as part of the year-long celebrations,” he said.
Mahesh Bigala said the centenary was being celebrated in 50 different countries as per the directions of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao. “We have decided to install statues of Narasimha Rao in the US, UK, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia and Mauritius. In the US, the statue will be erected in Washington DC and many other major cities,” he said. He also launched an online petition demanding Bharat Ratna award to the former Prime Minister. He added that efforts are being made to invite former US President Bill Clinton as a chief guest for the centenary celebrations to be held in Hyderabad next year.
Dr Saraswathi recalled that her father always used to tell her to work with dedication and concentrate on the work at hand. “He left an indelible mark on persons with whom he interacted through his impeccable behaviour and personality,” she said. Vani said that her father lived a very simple life. “He used to worship nature and also the nation. He also used to practice Yoga every day,” she said.
T Mahesh said that detailed plans had been drawn to organise the centenary celebrations worldwide with the support of NRIs. “Because of the preparatory work done by Narasimha Rao, Bill Clinton agreed to lend assistance to India in different sectors,”he recalled.
