Rains bring respite and also despair to Hyderabad

While mercury drops in different areas, some areas were flooded with rain water and poles, trees uprooted

Hyderabad: In the middle of a gruelling summer, the weekend turned out to be a pleasant one with skies remaining cloudy, mercury dropping down and spells of rain visiting different parts of the city on Saturday.

However, the showers while providing relief from the hot and punishing weather conditions ended up flooding some areas, uprooting trees and electricity poles and forcing motorists to wade through pools formed on some road stretches.

Six streetlight poles fell down due to heavy wind and rain at Falaknuma circle. However, there were no reports of death or serious injuries to any persons in these incidents, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials said.

According to Telangana State Development Planning Society, the highest cumulative rainfall of 30.8 mm was recorded a office till 6 pm, followed by 13.3 mm at Viratnagar, DMRL, Saroornagar and 9 mm in Moula Ali and Asmanghad.

Metro services between Moosapet and Miyapur were disrupted for a while after a flex fell on the high voltage line. The services were disrupted from 3.55 pm to 4.15 pm and normal operations resumed around 4.15 pm, L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited, tweeted.

At Noor Khan Bazar, a parapet wall of a newly constructed building collapsed on the neighbouring building compound wall and on three motorcycles.

Following the sudden rains, water flooded streets in different areas, affecting traffic flow. At pillar no.191 and PDP junction in Attapur and Suleman Nagar, water logging was complained from motorists.

Similarly, water stagnation was reported at Hashamabad Wali function Hall, Chandrayangutta flyover, Malakpet, Sama Narasimha Reddy garden and IS Sadan in Santosh Nagar.

A man suffered injuries following an accident at Nala Nagar. GHMC DRF wing personal immediately conducted first aid to the victim.

In view of likely thunderstorms in most areas, all project engineers were instructed to stay alert and take up precautionary measures to avoid flooding and ensure safety of motorists. They were directed to set up barricades at all deep excavation spots to avoid any untoward incidents.
