Raja Rithvik clinches 2nd IM norm

Hyderabad: Promising R Raja Rithvik of Hyderabad clinched his second International Master norm in the 11th Mumbai Mayors Cup that concluded in Mumbai on Monday.

The 10th class student of Orchids International School, Jubilee Hills scored 6.5 points out of 10 rounds. He won four games, drew five games and lost only a single round.

Playing against seven Grandmasters, Rithvik drew with seven of them and lost one match. In this Prestigious Championship, Rithvik has played against seven Grand Masters and defeated one Grand Master and drew with five Grand Masters. In the fifth round, Rithvik shocked Ukraine Grandmaster Neverov Valeriy. With a consistent show in this tournament, Rithvik improved his rating by 46 points from 2296 to 2340.

Around 200 players, including 20 Grandmasters and 30 International Masters from more than 25 countries participated in the tournament.

Earlier in April, Rithvik participated in Bangkok Open Chess Championship and achieved his first International Master Norm by scoring 6.5 points out of 9 rounds. He needs one more IM Norm to become International Master, which he is expected to achieve shortly.
