Bhadrachalam: The celestial wedding of Lord Rama and his consort Sita was celebrated traditionally here at the historical Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy temple on Thursday, albeit without the usual splendour.

For the first time ever in the history of the temple, the celestial wedding on Sri Rama Navami was celebrated only amid a couple of ministers, a few legislators and officials. Yet every tradition and custom was duly followed and the temple was beautifully decorated for the purpose.

The rituals related to the celebration started in the early hours and special pujas were conducted in the main temple. Later at 10 am, the festival deities were taken from the main temple to Beda Mandapam on temple premises amid chanting of vedic mantras.

The priests performed Vishwaksena puja and other rituals from 12 noon. In Abhijit Lagnam, the wedding ceremony was completed and talambralu event took place in a colourful manner.
Endowments Minister A Indrakaran Reddy offered silk clothes and mutyala talambralu to presiding deities on behalf of the State government in accordance with the tradition followed since the times of Bhakta Ramadasu.

“This time the celebration is somewhat different. Usually we welcome all to come and witness the celestial wedding of Lord Rama and Sita. But now, we told the devotees not to come to the temple. We ensured the number to be around 40,” said a priest seemingly upset at the rather peculiar occurrence.

The devotees were also equally upset for not being able to attend the celestial wedding.
“I am deeply disappointed at missing the chance to have a glimpse of the celestial wedding. I was fully prepared but had to cancel my travel and accommodation reservations in view of the lockdown,” Ghanta Shyam Kumar, a software engineer from Hyderabad told Telangana Today over phone.

Transport Minister P Ajay Kumar, Zilla Parishad Chairman K Kanakaiah, Mahbubabad MP B Kavitha, Bhadrachalam MLA Podem Veeraiah, Government Advisor KV Ramana Chary, Endowments Commissioner V Anil Kumar and Superintendent of Police Sunil Dutt were among those present.
