Diana was not only the Princess of Wales, but was also the most photographed woman in history. She was an activist, trailblazer, style icon, and one of the most influential people of the 20th Century, and died in a car crash in Paris, France. Two decades ago on August 31, 1997, millions of people around the world were shocked and saddened after knowing about Princess Diana’s death and so was her close friend Elton John.

Sir Elton Hercules John CBE, an English singer, songwriter, pianist, and composer, has worked with lyricist Bernie Taupin since 1967; they have collaborated on more than 30 albums. John has sold more than 300 million records, making him one of the world’s best-selling music artistes.

During the funeral service on September 6, 1997, more than 2,000 mourners poured onto the streets of London at Kensington Palace to wave their final goodbye at Princess Diana’s coffin.
Candle in the Wind 1997 is a song by Bernie Taupin and Elton John, a re-written and re-recorded version of their 1973 song.

His writing partner Bernie Taupin revised the lyrics of his 1973 song Candle in the Wind to honour Diana, and Taupin rewrote the song, accordingly.Candle in the Wind 1997 was released in 1997 with the global proceeds from the song going towards Diana’s charities.

The song was in The Guinness Book of Records, as the second highest-selling single of all time, leaving behind Bing Crosby’s White Christmas from 1942, and is the highest-selling single since charts began in the 1950s.

After the song released, it entered at number one in the UK Singles Chart, John’s fourth UK number one single, and became the best-selling single in UK chart history. In October, it became John’s ninth US number one single, where it topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 weeks, and is the best-selling single in Billboard history; it was the first single certified Diamond in the US.

The 1997 version won John the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the 40th Grammy Awards ceremony in 1998, and at the 1998 Brit Awards, the song was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Single. Still, until today, many conspiracy theorists aren’t satisfied with the ruling and have other ideas about how Diana died and it still stays an unresolved mystery.

Candle in the Wind 1997

 Elton John

Goodbye England’s rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
You called out to our country
And you whispered to those in pain
Now you belong to heaven
And the stars spell out your name
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England’s greenest hills
Your candle’s burned out long before
Your legend ever will
Loveliness we’ve lost
These empty days without your smile
This torch we’ll always carry
For our nation’s golden child
And even though we try
The truth brings us to tears
All our words cannot express
The joy you brought us through the years
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England’s greenest hills
Your candle’s burned our long before
Your legend ever will
Goodbye England’s rose
May you ever grow in our hearts
You were the grace that placed itself
Where lives were torn apart
Goodbye England’s rose
From a country lost without your soul
Who’ll miss the wings of your compassion
More than you’ll ever know
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never fading with the sunset
When the rain set in
And your footsteps will always fall here
Along England’s greenest hills
Your candle’s burned out long before
Your legend ever will
