Hyderabad: As expected dashing batsman Rishab Pant got the nod for shorter format too but in the process Dinesh Karthik made his way out from the team announced for the first two one-day internationals against West Indies.
Briefing the media persons here on Thursday, MSK Prasad, chairman of National selection committee, said Pant, who has been in the reckoning for ODIs after his explosive knocks in IPL and in the two Tests that he played so far, will also be the second wicketkeeper to veteran Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
“If the need arises he will be the back-up keeper as we all know who is our No.1 wicketkeeper in ODIs. In the search of second wicketkeeper we gave opportunities to DK (Dinesh Karthik) and right now we are giving the opportunity to Pant,” said Prasad.
Virat Kohli, who was rested for Asia Cup, is back as captain while Rohit Sharma, who led the side successfully, will be his deputy. Prasad even said that Kohli will play in all the five ODIs.
Prasad also dismissed any thoughts of two captain policy. According to Prasad, ever since Kohli took over the captaincy in 2015 in Test and subsequently in 2017 in all formats, he has led the team from the front. “We are number one in all the three formats of the game. As a player and captain he has excelled.”
Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar have been rested for the first two ODIs while Kedar Jadhav is yet to recover from his injury. Jadhav will come back after the first two ODIs. Injured Hardik Pandya will be available only in second week of November.
On Mohammad Shami’s recall, Prasad said they were zeroing on the third and fourth seamers’ spots for the next year’s World Cup in England. “We have 18 ODIs before the first World Cup match. So we need to figure out the fast bowlers and that is the reason we have picked Shami. We have also included Khalid (Ahmed), Shardul (Thakur) and Shami. We are looking at third and fourth seamer’s spot. Umesh Yadav is also in the picture,” said Prasad.
Team: Virat Kohli (Captain), Rohit Sharma (vice-captain), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Ambati Rayudu, Manish Pandey, MS Dhoni (wicket-keeper), Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Khaleel Ahmed, Shardul Thakur.
