Rohit Khandelwal, the Mister World of 2016 beauty pageant and the first Asian to win the title is someone close to our heart, and home! It’s because of the fact that the dashing and down-to-earth model-actor is not only from Hyderabad, but is a true blue Hyderabadi.
Catching up with Rohit gave us a chance to get to know a little more about the kind of person he is behind all his global achievements and glamour.
Where his journey began
The 28-year-old grew up in the Old City before shifting to Sun City, and then to Mumbai. He fondly recalls how his elder brother and he went for bike rides in and around Charminar and would munch on Chaat and Gulab jamun from the stall behind the Hanuman temple. “Mine is a nuclear family; it’s just my parents, my brother and I. My dad is a businessman and we all share a stron” he says. His first job was to work as a ground assistant for SpiceJet in Hyderabad.
Despite his father’s wish for him to take up the family business, Rohit left for Mumbai to fulfil his passion of becoming a star with the money he saved. At the age of 23, he stayed in a two BHK apartment with six other people and roamed around looking for jobs.
“I remember doing photo shoots for free because I had to upgrade my portfolio. I always carried a small bag with clothes and portfolio just in case I get lucky and bump into someone renowned,” he says. “I was running out of money; there was barely any work but it was my faith and hope that kept me moving ahead,” he adds.
A step closer to his dream
After his share of struggles and hard work, he won the prestigious title ‘Mister World’ in 2016 and that’s when he felt he was closer to his dream. “Modelling was never my ultimate goal; to make a mark in acting has always been my final goal,” admits Rohit. While he is busy with the ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ charity event, the 28-year-old shares that he will be shooting for Dhadkan 2 soon next year. Rohit will be seen in one of the lead roles and is waiting for the briefing to be done. “As a whole, the journey has been good and I have learned a lot in the past few years. I hope I’ll continue to be an inspiration for many,” he adds.
His other interests
He begins by admitting that he is a big time foodie and can never compromise on food. “The first thing that came to my head, when my name was announced as the winner of Mister World 2017, was food. All I wanted to do was to eat,” he says. He then says with laughter that when he reached his room, he sat on the couch with his legs folded and ate the bread and blueberry jam that was kept on the table. So, food and travel are basically his top interests, followed by fitness, dance, reading. And oh, Rohit is also a gadget freak.
Never giving up
For Rohit, life is all about timings and having the faith that someday everything would eventually fall into place. He says that he is very stubborn, so no matter what, there’s no giving up. “Having said that, I will only consider leaving everything and going back if my family wants me to — anything for my family,” he adds.
From fat to fab
Keeping in mind that he is a foodie, Rohit says, “It took me a year to get in shape, I was overweight during my initial years.” Now, he has adopted a healthier lifestyle and his diet consists more of fresh juices and veggies.
Keeping aside his acting and modelling passions, Rohit wants to open a personality development institute where he can provide guidance and exposure. “For me, I had to venture out all by myself, there was nobody to guide or direct. In a way, to give back to the society, I want to make this happen,” he says. “There are people on board to help me out in executing this project and it will be in Hyderabad,” he says proudly.
In a quest to find love?
While conversing, somehow the topic about his relationship popped up and after a few laughs, he says that he is single. “I would like to focus on work for now, but I would definitely want a family of my own,” he says. “There’s nothing better than a woman of substance,” he
