‘Rs.960 crore for housing in Vizag’

Visakhapatnam: The State government has taken up housing programme for people with an outlay of Rs.960 crore in the district, HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao said here on Monday.

Inaugurating the fourth round of Janmabhoomi programme at the Indira Priyadarsini Municipal Corporation Stadium in the old city, he said as many as 30,000 persons were sanctioned pensions during this round, while already 3.24 lakh pensioners were reaping the benefit in the district. Also, 1.43 lakh new ration cards were being issued in addition to the existing 11.2 lakh ration cards.

The Minister also said that the road-widening programme would be taken up in the old city. Visakhapatnam South MLA Vasupalli Ganesh Kumar said there were quite a few heritage buildings in his constituency and appealed to the govenrment as well as the people to preserve them. He also sought development of the Indira Priyadarsini stadium for which, according to government estimates, Rs.13.75 crore was needed.

Visakhapatnam MP K. Haribabu said the Chief Minister would lay the foundation stone for Purushottapatnam lift irrigation scheme on January 5. The scheme would cater to the water needs of Viakhapatnam district and plans were drawn up to complete it in a year’s time, he said.
