Hyderabad: Gone are the days when Shamirpet lake was just a movie shooting location far from the city. The area, which has seen a number of resorts and educational institutions coming up, is now moving into the next phase of evolution.
The Telangana State Tourism Development Corporation (TSTDC), which plans to harness the tourism potential of Shamirpet, is on the job of propping up the next weekend destination of the city, with a Rs 10 crore rural tourism project on the cards.
The project, expected to come up next to the Haritha Lakeview resort of the TSTDC, will be themed on the rural life in Telangana, with visitors being able to witness making of pots, handicrafts, artefacts and organic farming as well. People will also be able to buy products put up on display.
B Manohar, Managing Director, TSTDC, told ‘Telangana Today’ that the corporation was now focusing on rural tourism, which was why Shamirpet had been chosen for development. “We want visitors to experience the actual rural side of Telangana and hence a rural tourism project at Shamirpet. The project is in its preliminary stage,” Manohar said.
This apart, the corporation, which has already undertaken development of the premises of Shamirpet lake, now plans to set up a pylon that will depict the State government’s prestigious Mission Kakatiya and Mission Bhagiratha projects. Parks have already been developed and play equipment for children set up. The lake also has a boating facility.
“We have developed footpaths, parks and play equipment for children near the lake. There are two pedal boats for boating since the lake is not deep enough for mechanised boats. We plan to take up gardening in the rainy season, the TSTDC MD said. Apart from resorts and lake, Shamirpet is also home to the State-run Deer Park, making it a perfect place for picnics.
