Sangareddy District administration to improve millet cultivation

Narayankhed, Sigrapur, Zahirabad, Mogudampally and Jharasangam mandals have been chosen to motivate farmers to take up millet cultivation.

Sangareddy: Collector Vasam Venkateshwarlu on Wednesday called upon the farmers and agriculture officers to put in collective efforts to improve millet cultivation in Sangareddy district.

During a review meeting organised on ‘Telangana Millet’s Mission’ at Collectorate here on Wednesday, the Collector said that the government introduced Millet’s Mission on June 2 this year with an objective to improve the millet cultivation in the State. He said that the Agriculture Department will help farmers adopt best practices, processing and marketing for the produce.

Joint Collector K Nikhila Reddy said that people have been suffering from various health problems as they avoid millets in their diet. However, there has been a considerable change in people’s mindset in the past couple of years or so, she observed.

Joint Director, Agriculture, B Narsimha Rao said that they chose Narayankhed, Sigrapur, Zahirabad, Mogudampally and Jharasangam mandals in the district to motivate the farmers to take up millet cultivation, adding that they have aim at increasing the area under cultivation to 200 acres in each of the selected mandals.

Farmers from across the district and agriculture officials have attended the meeting.
