Hyderabad: It was a proud moment for Telangana’s Velpula Sarayu when she won the under-13 National Girls Chess Championship held recently in Visakhapatnam, AP. Sarayu, a girl prodigy from Mundrai village in Warangal, secured a total of nine points from 11 rounds to win the event.
In the final round, Velpula Sarayu, playing on the top table split the point against Wankhade Sanskruti of Maharashtra to stay at 9 points. Kriti Mayur Patel who accounted for Panda Miracle of Orissa also joined Sarayu to tie for the first place.
However, the direct encounter favoured Sarayau as she lifted the winner’s trophy and bagged a cash award of Rs.27000. Sarayu is trained by coach B Sampath who is behind Telangana’s first GM E Arjun’s success.
