Mancherial: This ensuing Bathukamma, the festival of flowers, is going to be a special occasion for women belonging to the poor strata of society in Telangana. The State government’s historic move to distribute saris to the economically weak women aged above 18 years has brought smiles on their faces.

Women celebrate the nine-day long unique and important festival of Telangana by dressing in their best. They leave no stone unturned to buy new garments and compete with one another in sporting new looks. However, those who fall in the below poverty line category and cannot afford to follow suit are disheartened. However, they will have a reason to celebrate Bathukamma this time.

In order to help the economically backward women celebrate the festival with pride, the State government has decided to sponsor saris for the first time in the history of the country. This will certainly cheer the beneficiaries during Bathukumma. Indeed, 87 lakh women from financially poor backgrounds of the State are eagerly waiting to flaunt their new apparel to be handed over soon.

In Mancherial district alone, 2,54,916 saris are going to be distributed among the poor women, 2, 48, 486 saris in Nirmal and 2.29 lakh saris in Adilabad from September 18. Recently, committees were formed to identify the genuine beneficiaries and stocks were sent to godowns of agriculture market committees.

The beneficiaries are required to submit a photocopy of their Aadhaar card or identity card during the distribution of saris. They would be given saris measuring five-and-a-half metres long and 80 cm blouse piece. While the elderly women will get coloured border saris, printed saris will be distributed among young women.
