Hyderabad: A soldier’s story can inspire many. And for seven-year-old Nyorah Patra, it wasn’t any different. At an age when most children would be content playing with their toys, Nyorah already had different interests, spending time painting and listening to music.

However, the Republic Day Parade on television in January 2020 triggered a new interest in her. The Indian Armed Forces caught the child’s fancy, and with her parents, Samir and Varsha Patra, narrating stories of brave soldiers, the interest only grew. Her father fuelled it further by showing her videos from social media on the tough conditions that the Indian Army operated in.

Nyorah’s interest soon grew into wanting to see herself in uniform, apart from that she began to tell her parents that she wanted to meet a real soldier. Her paintings too began to be all about the forces. Seeing this, her parents wrote to the Prime Minister seeking a special visit for their daughter to any army establishment or to extend an invitation to attend either the Independence Day or Republic Day celebrations. To their surprise, they were contacted by the PMO following a few emails and were told that a special arrangement would be made in Hyderabad for Nyorah to visit an Army establishment.

A few days later, the Indian Artillery establishment in Golconda here extended an invitation to Nyorah, that too not just to visit them but as a special guest for the Army Day and Army Veteran’s Day celebrations.

She was escorted by an officer of Colonel’s rank and two soldiers from her home and taken to the Veerula Sainik Smarak, the War Memorial in Secunderabad where Major General RK Singh, General Officer Commanding, Telangana and Andhra Sub Area, and veterans received her, as she stood proud in a camouflage uniform. The soldiers made the occasion even better by presenting her with gifts.
